Above shows the sky. Tilting your head up, a cloudy day is revealed, where sheets of clouds roll swiftly. The dark tone, lack of “people,” and contrast between the top and bottom of the image creates an isolated area. This image was chosen to be in conversation with Longing, where Marie leans on a window frame, without the background of a “sky.” It continues to express the “wishful” emotions and isolated tone depicted in Longing. The large bitmap texture conveys some of the fluidity and dream-like qualities, and despite the title of this piece, the viewer still questions what they are looking at, what Marie is looking at. The image is also tied to a personal habit of mine. Occasionally I will find myself in a contemplative, melancholy, reflective mood, thinking of “what ifs.” During those times, I watch clouds or try and see wind in the leaves of trees. The picture in Above was taken during one cloud watching session. I felt like the sky was telling me something.
